Terry was diagnosed two years ago with bipolar and dementia. Cathleen thinks he may also have signs of PTSD after serving in Vietnam. Terry currently lives at The Gables. Cathleen explained that she is very disappointed at the lack of engagement provided and misrepresentation of the community. Cathleen explained that her relationship with Jerry is very challenging because she attempts to provide him with excellent care and direction but he is always defensive and they typically end up arguing. She's hoping that by providing a consistent, well matched companion who can pick up some of those directives and goals, it may allow her and Terry to reconnect on a more positive level. Terry can walk independently, he still cooks for himself. She believes he'll benefit from assistance with light housekeeping, someone who can help identify and attend interesting activities/ events, motivate and lead in regular exercise, and simply listen to his many stories. I explained the importance of our whole personal approach to care, our Balanced Care Method, and she was very excited about our personalized care plan which includes learning about Terry's interests, past hobbies etc so that we can include them in scheduled activities. Cathleen told me that one hot spot is that Terry has been sucked in by telemarketing and buys into every offer he sees in the mail. She would like somebody to go through the mail with him and discourage him from putting any more money into coins, or collector's books, or collector plates. Cathleen works long hours and suggests that meeting with Terry without her would probably allow TheKey to meet the real Terry.
