Client Narrative: Henry Gleissner 70, suffers from a rare spinal cord
condition called Syringomyelia. Syringomyelia is a neurological disorder
that occurs when a fluid-filled cyst, called a syrinx, forms in the spinal
cord. Henry is, cognitively, very high functioning. He will be able to tell
the caregiver exactly what he needs, he will be aware if his medications
are incorrect. The cyst inside his spinal cord makes him unable to walk or
stand. The cyst has caused additional complications and frailty of his
bones. So caregivers cannot manipulate Henry's body position by pulling on
his arms.
Henry lives on the first floor of a 3 story home. They own a transfer
device similar to a Hoyer lift but superior in that it can assist with
raising a client off of the floor in the event of a fall. Henry uses a
motorized scooter during the day. Meals are pre-made and delivered by
"Factor Meals" and only require heating, He will require assistance with
all ADL's meals, personal care, bedpan, medication assistance.
At midnight his catheter will be emptied, he will receive medications, and
then return to sleep until 8am.
Melinda must be out of town starting 1/18 or 1/19 through 1/28 or 1/29.
Melinda had used a different agency in the past. Both she and Henry were
very disappointed by the lack of experience of the team sent to care for
Henry. She is very apprehensive to try again but has no choice but to try
again. Melinda is Henry's sole caregiver. So she is hoping for a positive
experience as she could benefit greatly from ongoing respite support.
Melinda will want to start service a few days prior to her departure, while
she is still home, so she feels confident in the team. Of course, I assured
her we would never assigned a caregiver who has no experience working with
a Hoyer lift. Melinda had visited our website and is expecting the quality
of service that our website presented. We reviewed everything about our
services, experience, quality and dependability. I explained that we
provide hourly service as well as live-in care. I tried to explain the
difference between the two and their Care Manager will advise them on the
best approach to staffing.
He will require care including:
-transfer device (similar to a Hoyer lift)
-frequent catheter care (significantly high output)
-bedpan
-dressing
-sponge bathing
-meal assist
-medication
-lt housekeeping
-engagement
There is a senior dog in the home but he will be boarded during the time
Melinda is out of town. However, keep in mind the dog will be in the home
during the training days.. caregivers will NOT be responsible for the dog
at that time.
